Majestic Mandalay & Beyond

Spend 8 days in the “Land of a Million Pagodas,” go on sunset boat rides & visit ancient temples, a legendary palace & more!

About Your Trip

Delve into Myanmar’s treasured antiquities and sacred sites on this DreamTrip to Mandalay, the last royal capital of Burma. Explore ancient landmarks starting with a tour of Shwenandaw Kyaung (“Golden Palace Monastery”), an architectural masterpiece made of hand-carved teakwood, followed by a stop at the remarkable Kuthodaw Paya. At the Mahamuni Temple, you’ll marvel at one of the most famous Buddha images in existence! Next is a visit to the renowned Mandalay Palace — King Mindon’s contribution to the royal city. End the day with a spectacular sunset on a boat with views of U Bein Bridge, the longest and oldest teakwood bridge on Earth.

The following day, head east and discover natural beauty and more historical wonders in Pyin Oo Lwin. Tour the gilded Maha Ant Htoo Kan Thar Pagoda and capture breathtaking photographs at Pwe Kauk Falls, a pair of tiered cascades with shallow swimming spots. You’ll also take in some of the region’s most stunning landscapes at the National Kandawgyi Gardens and enjoy a relaxing ride through town in a horse-drawn carriage.

The excitement doesn’t stop there! After arriving in Bagan, enjoy a serene sunset boat ride along the Irrawaddy River (also known as the Ayeyarwady River). Indulge in a delectable Myanmar-style dinner before heading back to Bagan and the comfort of your hotel.

Another full-day sightseeing tour takes you to some of Bagan’s most popular places, including Shwezigon Paya, Htilominlo Temple, Ananda Temple and Dhammayangyi Temple. After lunch, visit the Gawdawpalin Temple, the second-tallest sanctuary in Bagan. The 6th day of your stay features a tour of the Nyaung U market, the ideal place to enjoy a genuine taste of local culture, cuisine and more. You’ll also see a lacquerware workshop where you’ll learn about this commonly practiced art form.

Back in Mandalay, you’ll have ample leisure time to discover the city at your own pace. If you have the energy, climb 1,729 stairs to the summit of nearby Mandalay Hill for panoramic views of the city and beyond. How about an extinct volcano? At Mt. Popa, you can traverse the winding covered staircase to visit the monastery and temple complex on the hilltop, with shrines to the 37 nats (or spirits) along with the spectacular views.

What we love:
• Mahamuni Temple is an important pilgrimage site and home to a sacred, gold-leaf-covered Buddha statue.
• The world’s biggest book, consisting of more than 700 inscribed marble stone slabs, is found at the Buddhist stupa, Kuthodaw Paya.
• Vibrant flowers, fruits, vegetables, textiles and handicrafts greet your gaze in every direction, inviting you to learn more about daily life in Nyaung U.
• If you’re a fan of George Orwell, you’ll be interested to know that his classic novel “Burmese Days” is set in 1930s Mandalay when the country was under British colonial rule.

Destination

Considered the center of Burmese culture, Mandalay’s rich and exotic past attracts tourists from all over the world. With Buddhism as the predominant religion, the city is home to architecturally impressive monasteries and striking pagodas, including the Mahamuni Temple, a major pilgrimage site.

Bagan is home to many of Myanmar’s most popular Buddhist sites, including more than 2,200 ancient temples, pagodas and stupas. While many visitors choose to rent a bicycle or hire a horse and cart to explore the area’s prehistorical wonders, locals recommend viewing the lay of the land from above in a hot air balloon. As one of the country’s most popular sightseeing destinations, the Bagan Archaeological Zone’s undeniable allure is often compared to that of Cambodia’s sacred Angkor Wat.
